No more playing – ewz, SGS, and Venios are serious

Greencity Zürich. – Switzerland’s first 2000-watt site combines economy and ecology in symbiosis. In this unique project, the municipal utilities of the city of Zürich (ewz), in cooperation with the partners smart grid solutions AG and Venios GmbH, show how intelligent and sustainable ecological energy supply is consistently integrated into the distribution grid.

Challenge

The increasing share of electromobility, decentralized generation of renewable energies, and semi-autonomous district solutions as well as legislative requirements ensure that ewz invests in the digitization and intelligence of its own distribution grid. Especially in the inner-city area, grid expansion is not always possible. So despite available financial resources, the grid operation must be supported with modern means, says Benedikt Loepfe, head of distribution grids at ewz.

Since the research project GridBox, the largest smart grid project in Switzerland, ewz has been advancing the approach of collecting and analyzing grid status information in real-time, dynamically adapting the distribution grid to current requirements. In Greencity, ewz is now systematically pursuing this approach.

Solution

The modern technologies of smart grid solutions and Venios enable ewz to have detailed knowledge of the energetic situation and the load status of the Greencity network area at all times, so that charging infrastructure for electromobility, PV generation, and heat pumps can be optimally operated without burdening the existing grid infrastructure. Automated and cost-efficient!
