The world’s first Azure Private Cloud in the utility sector

“The enormous computing capacities for monitoring smart grids can no longer be made available today without cloud applications. To guarantee the highest security standards, we have established the world’s first Microsoft Azure Private Cloud for Utilities in a German data centre.”

Dr. rer. nat. Christian Köhler, Co-founder of Venios, CIO/CTO

Without a cloud, storm clouds gather

The critical infrastructure of energy network operators requires a high standard of security. Ideally, data should not leave the company. In parallel, new processes require enormous computing capacity, which can only be made available with cloud technology.

To create an alternative to traditional cloud providers (AWS, Microsoft, etc.), Venios and rku.it have established the world’s first Microsoft Azure Private Cloud for utilities in a local German data centre. Operated by a shareholder association of energy suppliers, KRITIS data remains within the municipal framework of the energy industry while enjoying all the benefits of a cloud solution.
